A milling cutter is a tool commonly used for metalworking, and its working principle can be simply described as the process of cutting and removing material. Milling cutters usually consist of parts such as a shank, a blade and a fixture.During milling operations, the shank of the milling cutter is fixed to the machine tool by a fixture, and the blade is exposed on the surface of the material. When the machine tool starts to operate, the shank and the blade will move relative to the material.
The cutting process of the milling cutter is mainly carried out by rotation. The machine tool drives the motor or other power source on the milling cutter to rotate the blade rapidly. After the rotating blade contacts the surface of the material, the cutting edge on the blade will rub and impact with the material, thereby cutting the material.
As the blade rotates, the milling cutter moves in the cutting direction, pushing the blade to continue to contact the material. By controlling the moving speed and cutting depth of the milling cutter, the amount and shape of the material removed during the cutting process can be controlled.
The cutting process of the milling cutter can be divided into two main types: face milling and column milling. Face milling refers to a cutting method in which the blade contacts the surface of the material vertically, and a smooth surface is processed by cutting the material. Column milling refers to a cutting method in which the blade is in parallel contact with the material surface, and a groove or protrusion of a specific shape is machined by cutting the material.
In addition to cutting the material, the milling cutter also generates cutting force and cutting temperature. In order to avoid excessive heat during the cutting process, cooling lubricants are needed to reduce the cutting temperature and ensure the performance of the blade.
In general, the milling cutter removes material by cutting the material, using the friction and impact of the rotating blade on the material surface, and achieves precise processing by controlling the moving speed and depth of the blade.
